What is a Subtle Vegetarian?
Welcome to the Subtle Vegetarian, an online haven for those of us who would rather be judged for who we are than for what we eat.
Why be subtle?
Sure, being a vegetarian is different. Abnormal, even. But most of us (supposedly 5% of the population of the United States) are more than what we (don’t) eat. We’re business people, moms and dads, kids, teachers, etc. Some of us are actually quite extraordinary for reasons other than the mere fact that we choose not to eat meat.
But mention that you are a vegetarian, or even just let it slip out, and you’re likely to hear the same questions: “How long have you been a vegetarian?” and “Why not eat meat?” or the dreaded “my niece was a vegetarian in college but she finally gave it up…” People who would never question your religion, beliefs, or health have no problem at all waxing philosophical about the underpinnings of your non-eating.
Then there’s the restaurant industry. At times, it seems like these fine folks are openly antagonistic to those of us who choose not to eat animals. Forcing us into off-menu ordering and appetizering, it seems like there’s a conspiracy to unmask the subtlest of us.
Well, I got sick of it!
So here’s my response: A web site dedicated to what we can and do eat. We will not be political, moral, or religious. We will not try to convert you. We will simply talk about how to live in these United States without eating meat and without calling unwanted attention to ourselves.
